Víðgelmir cave
Viðgelmir cave in Hallmundarhraun lava field is 33 kilometers away from the main crater and 5 kilometers away from the Surtshellir cave. The lava tube is 1585 meters long, its highest point is 15,8 meters and the widest point is 16,5 meters. The volume of the cave is well over 150,000 cubic meters and it is definitely one of the largest caves in Iceland. The only entrance to the cave is a huge 75 meters long and 15 meters wide pitfall, which is also deep. This cave is precious not only because of its natural beauties like stalactites, stalagmites and colorful lava formations, it also has a historical value. Different finds as bones, pieces of leather clothing, parts of women necklace were discovered in the cave. It is estimated that they reach the period of 970.
