Þeistareykjahraun caves

Þeistareykjahraun lava field is considered  young. It is not older than 3000 years and about 25 square kilometers big. There are several caves in the area, most of them are very short. The biggest cave in the lava field is called Togarahellir. The cave is not long, about 60 meters, but quite big and spacious. The height of the cave is 10 - 12 meters and it is about 15 meters wide. The ground of the cave is covered with water all year round. In wintertime water is frozen and in summertime it looks like a lake with some ice on the bottom. There are other interesting caves around Togarahellir which are quite small, but deep and possible to reach only with a special equipment.
