Fimmvörðuháls volcano eruption

The eruption in Fimmvörðuháls began on 20 March 2010 and it was the first phase of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption. Eruption began with a 150 meters long fissure consisting of 10 - 12 craters, rejecting lava up to 150 meters into the air. On 31 March another fissure opened which was 200 - 300 meters long and new craters were seen erupting. Both fissures shared the same lava chamber. The alkali olivine basalt lava was quite viscous and that caused its slow movement. Compared to other eruptions this eruption was relatively small. Today it is possible to visit the eruption site and to touch still warm lava.
