Hengill geothermal area
Hengill is a central volcano which lies 20 minutes from Reykjavik. The volcano is still active and there is a lot of geothermal activity around it, but the last eruption occurred approximately 2000 years ago. Magma is collecting in the magma chamber of the volcano and the next eruption very likely will be huge. Hengill geothermal area is one of the biggest and most powerful in Iceland and it provides energy for two geothermal plants. It also offers numerous colorful hot springs and fumaroles and even a hot river for exotic bathing after an impressive hike.
