Geysir geothermal field
Geothermal area of the famous Geysir lies in Haukadalur, next to the small hill called Laugafell in South Iceland. The geothermal area is believed to be around 3 km² big. One of the most important sights in the area is Geysir, which has been active for approximately 10,000 years. Sadly Geysir is not so active anymore and nearby geyser Strokkur attracts visitors with eruptions every few minutes. Strokkur is the most energetic spouting spring in Iceland. It spouts sometimes to a height of 40 m, yet generally to around 10-20 meters. Around the geysers visitors can see many colorful hot springs with boiling water. For a great overview over the area it is recommended to walk up the Laugafell hill. It's quite an easy walk.
