Icelandic horses
Horse is very important in Icelandic culture. Until couple of decades ago there was low number of roads, suitable cars in Iceland, and the horse was not only a working animal but a good and reliable friend. One of the fascinating features of the Icelandic horse is its extreme purity. No infusion from outside blood have been made for 800 years and there is only one horse breed in Iceland. Since 1882 import of the horses is forbidden by law and no horse which leaves the country can ever come back. That helps to protect Icelandic horses from diseases, from which horses in other countries suffer. This small, but long - lived and hardy horse is very universal, it is used for the farm work as well as for leisure, showing and racing. The Icelandic horse is a five - gaited breed. The gaits are walk, trot and canter/ gallop, like in other horses, additional gaits are tölt (very smooth) and skeið (the thrilling and fun flying pace).
