Icelandic sheep

Icelandic sheep is one of the worlds oldest and purest breeds of sheep. For almost a thousand years Icelandic sheep has been used for meat, fiber and milk. Its wool is rather unique, the fleece has a fine soft undercoat and a coarser outer coat. The outer coat sheds rain well and the inner coat keeps warm and protects from the harsh Icelandic winds. Icelandic sheep are strong and individualistic and are used to take care of themselves during long summers in the mountains. Most of the sheep are white today, but almost a fifth of the population are in a variety of colors, the breed is primarily horned, but about a third of the sheep are polled. Big event in Iceland is sheep gathering from the mountains every September which is a big fun to take part in.
