Mývatn lake
Mývatn is an eutrophic lake situated in north - east Iceland in the area of active volcanism. The lake was created by huge basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, such as pseudocraters or lava pillars. The name of the lake means 'lake of midges', huge amounts of small flies are to be found around the lake in summertime. The lake and the area around it are protected as a nature reserve and surprise their visitors with the variety of landscapes: hot spring fields, caves, craters and lava towns can be seen around Mývatn.
