Gullfoss waterfall
The famous Gullfoss (Golden falls) is located in Southwest Iceland and is a part of the Golden Circle tour. The waterfall is situated in the upper part of the river Hvítá and falls down in two cascades. One cascade is 11 meters high and the other - 22 meters. Early in the 20th century it was planned to build the power plant in Hvítá river, what would change the waterfall forever. It is said, that the daughter of the owner protested against it and threatened to throw herself into Gullfoss, if the power plant will be built. Gullfoss was saved and today it belongs to the government and is protected.
